Prague – part 2 (far from over)

This week I’ve read a book I hadn’t thought about in a long time and I was in a nostalgic mood, so I thought about Kafka. Well, almost everything makes me think about Kafka so it wasn’t really unexpected but anyway…

Kafka made me think about Prague and Prague made me want to post this drawing. To me it is a good representation of why this city is stuck in my head since I’ve been there in February. It is grandiose, beautiful and for my entire stay I could feel something hovering over my head, something great. The castle of course was almost always in my line of sight. Reminding me of the incredible ingenuity men can demonstrate : assembling rocks to build cathedrals or words to write novels. I could see the narrative written by Kafka unfolding in front of me. I could feel the mutual influence between him and the city.

And with that I could feel his influence on me. In Prague I was feeling at home yet far from it. There is a word for the later in French ” dépaysé “.

It is strange how comfortable and easy it can be to just let myself slip into this imaginary world that feels like it was made just for me. A world in which imagination and “spirituality” play a greater role than the pragmatic reality. It is strange how it can feel more real in a new environment that helps you notice it than in everyday life when you just tend to forget.

Reality is what you feel and interpret as much as what there is to perceive. That makes life absurd yet unique for everyone.

Don’t you feel it sometimes ? Don’t you often see memories and ideas appearing while watching something, wonderful or not, that could just be meaningless?

Indivisible clouds

I made this drawing as a commissioned work for someone I used to co-work with.

I really like this kind of drawings with dots. The symbolism of a multitude of insignificant, rough, most basic and imperfect little things, ; created by the contacts of two opposites : the dark ink of a pointy pen and the white, immaculate and smooth piece of paper. All this absurdity, put in a larger perspective to create meaning.

The line has meaning, the letter does to. They have shape and intention. But the dot isn’t even placed with premeditation. It is only the momentum that made it exist, and it is the same momentum that will make it bland and invisible in the mass.  But despite all of it, it gives texture, meaning and a certain “beauty” to the ensemble.

I hope to be a dot…

Drawing challenges by Tangomiva #22 : Attachment

Every time, 1 new compulsory theme, 3 mindsets, 3 ways to show it.

Drawings done by Eva, Naomi and ThatRestlessPlatypus.

That Restless Platypus : My drawing represents how, to me, attachment and affection can keep me grounded in reality (which can be hard for me sometimes) and how they help me try to express emotions and exchange thoughts. This is actually an happy drawing even though it doesn’t fells like it.

Eva : Attachment between two people. Are the hands moving closer or further away from each other ? The vulture looks like a bad omen but it is in fact an animal that lives with his wate all his life. It is a game about the ambiguity of attachment : both good and bad emotion.

Isn’t it funny how Naomi’s drawing has parts of both our drawings in hers ?

Naomi : My drawing represents the scary aspect of offering ones heart without knowing what we’ll get back : Suffering or Happiness.

Portraits : Sanguine – Humors 3/4

A long time ago I painted 4 self-portraits based on the concept of Hippocratic humors. Recently I wanted to revisit the concept by adding some personal symbolism.

Here is the sanguine part of me.

Beauty is harmony, passion is intertwining and great things hide in those details.

Portraits : Melancholy – Humors 1/4

A long time ago I painted 4 self-portraits based on the concept of Hippocratic humors. Recently I wanted to revisit the concept by adding some personal symbolism (that I won’t explain).

Here is the melancholic part of me

Experimentation : Fragments

Some moments feel like they will never disappear from our memory, for a long time they look like they are carved in our mind and that they will always be there to be remembered as vivid and meaningful as the first day.

But memory isn’t recorded, it’s as if a part your brain said something again and again so it doesn’t disappear while another part of you think about what happened, how it happened and what could have happened. The more time passes, the more confuse it gets, details disappear or change only leaving enough to make us fill the blanks with our imagination.

Soon the frontier between dream and memory fades away and the meaning of this past transforms into symbols : grand and incredible symbols. But those symbols are as true and valid as the original meanings and facts. for the one experiencing it anyway, since our only grip on reality is through the filter of how we experience it.

Portraits : Random reflections

While trying to draw faces, I often find myself in need of a model. Now my sketchbooks are filled with unknown persons who had expressions which attracted my sight. It’s amusing to think that I don’t know anything about them but I might be the only person in the world to notice that moment when this girl seemed lost in her mind looking at the horizon scrolling on the other side of the windows.

Experimentation : About devoted knights in tales

A lot of stories in literature are about a brave knight saving a defenseless princess with no backstory. I often find them dull and a bit annoying but I’m not sure they all are the proof of any disregard or bad opinion about women.

Can’t some of them simply be stories written by lonely hung-up guys ?

He’s there, alone in his empty home, trying to imagine himself as worthy to be loved by some oblivious girl he knows. He would need to be brave, to be beautiful, to be smart and eloquent. He would have to imagine himself as all that he is not… On the other side his princess is there already, he doesn’t have to create everything : she is perfect already, why taking the risk of spoiling her perceived perfection by recreating her persona.

She only need a reason to notice him now. And so, the knight has to endure many trials but in the end she does the most important part of the story : She sees him. And I can assure you, for the poor lonely writer of the story, this is an effort greater than every challenge the knight has to face.

Well, anyway, that’s my take on that…

What do you think about it ? Are you annoyed by the dull depiction of feminine characters in many stories ?

Anyway thank you for reading this and if you want to be the most important part of my story, you are free to like and comment here and on our facebook page.

Portraits : Work in progress

Drawing a face is actually quite hard…

I’ve decided to train myself and I won’t stop until I do something satisfying!
